As a child, I made sure to take my Flintstone’s Multi-Vitamin. Remember those? Wilma Flintstone was my favorite.
I didn’t take any vitamins or supplements for many of my teenage and young adult years. I trusted that my diet, which consisted of mostly vegetarian options, would provide me with what my body needed to thrive.
I began taking supplements again only after I was advised to get a full blood test workup to make sure my diet was doing what I thought it would.
The blood test showed that my Vitamin B12 levels were lower than normal, which was to be expected with a vegetarian or vegan diet. Why? The human body is unable to make Vitamin B12. Traditionally, Vitamin B12 was consumed via animal products thanks to their consumption of grass and other natural products.
Today, with the introduction of increased chemicals and pesticides, the consumption of B12 has decreased greatly. The B12 gets destroyed when the chemicals are sprayed on the animals’ food.
Since I began taking at least one dose of Vitamin B12 a day, I’ve seriously felt like a new person! In addition to B12, I take a few other supplements. Here are my choices for my top everyday supplements.
Vitamin B12
So, I’ve already explained that taking a B12 supplement changed my life. But why is it so important?
Vitamin B12 helps to keep your cells healthy and helps them to continue to create more DNA. This is essential to even out the typical cell death that happens daily. When we start to have more cell death than regeneration, aging occurs.
Vitamin B12 is also important in preventing megaloblastic anemia, a condition that can make people feel tired and weak. I think that this condition is what I was experiencing before I started taking a Vitamin B12 supplement. Only once my vitamin levels increased did I realize how fatigued I’d felt for so long.
My choice for Vitamin B12 is Garden of Life’s mykind Organic B12 spray. I’ve been using this spray for years and still love taking it. It’s convenient because you only need one spray under your tongue a day to start feeling results. It also has a great flavor. This will be useful when discussing my go-to Vitamin D supplement below. The spray is also accessible. You don’t need to worry about taking a pill, so it’s great for children and old people alike.
Vitamin D3 with K2
We all know vitamin D comes best from the sun. But if you aren’t able to get out on a regular basis, a Vitamin D3 supplement is just what you need. Vitamin D is important for maintaining strong teeth and bones, a healthy heart and immune system, and boosting your mood. It’s incredibly important for the absorption of calcium in your bones.
Many Vitamin D supplements only include Vitamin D. They also offer the vitamin in forms that aren’t easily absorbed by your body. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, meaning that it dissolves and is absorbed in fat cells. Fat-soluble should be taken in an oil format, like Mary Ruth’s Vegan Vitamin D3 + K2 spray. The spray has an olive oil base, which honestly takes quite meh since it’s unflavored, but I deal with it since I know that my body’s absorbing these vital nutrients more efficiently.
What’s With The Vitamin K?
The addition of Vitamin K2 allows Vitamin D to be more easily absorbed by your bones. Vitamin D enables your body to absorb calcium from your gut. Vitamin K helps your body move that calcium into your bones. Without Vitamin K, calcium could be deposited in your blood vessels, which could potentially cause issues. So, as you see, it’s important to ensure you’re taking a Vitamin D supplement that includes Vitamin K2.
People with certain medical conditions need to be mindful of their Vitamin K consumption. Please do your research and check with your doctor to ensure it’s safe for you to consume.
TIP: Spray your Vitamin B12 supplement under your tongue first. Spray your Vitamin D3 + K2 supplement on top to save your tastebuds!
Vitamin C
You know what they say: “You’re feeling sick? Make sure to take your vitamin C!” Well, ok, babes, consider it done!
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is arguably one of the most important vitamins you need to consume. It plays a role in nearly every area of your body. It’s instrumental in protecting and healing your cells. According to the Mayo Clinic, Vitamin C is essential to forming bone blood vessels, cartilage, muscle, and collagen. It protects your cells from free radicals, which are known to be damaging to cells and even possibly cancer.
Again, Garden of Life’s mykind Organic Vitamin C is my go-to. Just a few sprays under your tongue a day is all you need to help keep the nasties away. I like to spray about 5-ish sprays under my tongue both in the morning and night. The flavor I typically order it in Orange/Tangerine flavor. But if you prefer a raspberry flavor, no worries. That’s available for you, too.
Full disclaimer: I haven’t taken a Vitamin C supplement in a while, but I still believe it’s helpful when you’re feeling sick or to prevent sickness.
